Superlative Chronometer Certification.
INCREDIBLE HISTORY
Submariner and deep-sea diving have been closely linked. With the introduction of scuba-diving, deep-sea explorations accelerated. Rolex had a significant role to produce and develop water-resistant chronometer watches. The Oyster case was patented in 1926. In order to meet the needs of divers, Rolex started a process in 1926. Colloborating with pioneers of diving, the conducted experiments and respective technical developments paved the way for the introduction of the Submariner in 1953. It was waterproof to a depth of 100 meters (330 feet).
The waterproofness of the Submariner was enhanced to 200 metres (660 feet) one year after its first release. It was later embedded with other technical innovations including luminescent disc to clearly distinguish it. The Submariner Date was introduced in 1969 with the added date function. Its waterproofness was enhanced to 300 meters (1,000 feet) in 1979.
Submariner and Submariner Date have started to go beyond the marine world. These tool watches have become popular for not only the marine world but also land world.
FUNCTIONAL AND LEGIBLE
Due to the nature of diving, it is highly important to be able to read the time precisely. Thus, the dial is designed to be very visible. The hands showing hour and minute are visibly different in size and shape and the markers for hours are designed to form simple geometric forms providing an easy and reliable reading of time.
Chromalight display is a distinguishing feature in the aforementioned models. The hands and hour markers have luminescent material enabling blue glow in dark. The zero marker is triangular which makes it visible in the bezel in dark.
HIGH-END CERAMIC
Rolex was one of the first brand to play important role to use special ceramics for bezels and bezel inserts. Besides being scratchproof, the ceramic bezels are in colors which have rare intensity and are resistant to adverse effects of environment. Rolex has great expertise and production methods enabling it to be totally independent in manufacturing ceramic components.
ROLESOR
Rolesor is the combination of 18 ct gold and Oystersteel. It has been a distinctive signature of this brand since 1933. The perfect harmony of two metals mirrors the elegance and performance that come together in a Rolex watch.
THE OYSTER CASE
The Oyster case which is robust and highly reliable is waterproof to a depth of 300 meters (1,000 feet). The middle case is made of a solid Oystersteel, a especially corrosion-resistant alloy, or from 18kt white gold. The caseback is embedded with a special tool allowing only Rolex watchmakers to have access to the movement. Triplock winding crown has waterproofness system. It screws in safely into the case and is secured by an crown guard. Scratchproof sapphire and Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading are fitted to the case. Case provides optimum protection for the movement.
PERPETUAL CALIBERS
Succesively equipped with with caliber 3230 and 3235, movements for the new-generation Submariner and Submariner Date have been completely developed and produced by Rolex. Precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, convenience and reliability are the most fundamental gains.
Patented by rolex, Calibers 3230 and 3235 feature Chronergy escapement combining energy efficiency and dependability. Since it is made of nickel-phosphorus, it is insensitive to magnetic fields. The movements embedded with blue Parachrom hairspring is 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. The regularity of calibres is strenghtened with a Rolex overcoil. The oscillator is fitted on Paraflex shock absorbers, enhancing shock resistance of movements.
OYSTER BRACELET AND OYSTERLOCK SAFETY CLASP
Developed at the end of the 1930s, this three-piece link bracelet is known for its robustness. Rolex-designed and -patented Oysterlock folding safety clasp used on these two new versions prevent unintentional openings.
The Oyster bracelet includes ceramic inserts to increase its flexibility and longevity on the white gold version of the Submariner Date. Additionally, attachment system which is concealed offers visual continuity between the bracelet and case.
SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION
Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Submariner and Submariner Date are covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015.
