Excellent design and dimensional consistency since it was first produced, except for a few years. Due to its iconic diving watch design, it always makes you feel a lack or unnecessary excess in other diving watches!
On September 1, Rolex introduced its new Submariner. First, let’s talk about the previous version of the introduced model. Where did the change begin, let’s start the analysis. The first version of the Submariner was with a ceramic bezel. A modern version was released after years of classic, elegant cased production. Thicker lugs (strap, bracelet arms), larger crown guards (protrusions protecting the crown) … It is the work of masters who preserve the 40mm size and make the watch look completely different. It is a model that people purchase in addition to old submariner. The version with a more modern but consistent design, while maintaining different core values and measures. In addition, it’s an incredibly fine-tuned bracelet. They also produced a green bezel and dial version (Hulk) of this model and placed it among the legendary series.
As for the new version… Rolex made the new submariner look more classic by thinning the thick lugs in the previous version. I have no objection to this. In fact, as a person who likes nato straps, I like it more. Because I can’t quite match nato straps or leather straps with thick wrists. But I think this thinning did not help the continuation. When I made a very minimal manipulation on the crown guard and left it with a view that I could still call large, it created a problem in the design integrity of the watch.
Secondly, it started to use a new mechanism with 70 hours of reserve. Is it a topic to be criticized? Of course no! But is it important? I don’t think so … Because, in the previous versions, there is a mechanism with proven high quality, stopwatch and 48 hour of reserve. All of them are in-house. For this reason, the fact that an in-house quality mechanism has 48 hours or 70 hours of reserve is not something that will change the equation in my opinion. Because today, among ~ 500 USD watches, there are mechanisms with a very decent reserve of> 80 hours.
And finally back to the main topic … Submariner, which spent about 60 years with a size of 40mm, suddenly became 41mm. Recently, it has shown various signals, perhaps by enlarging its different models. Some of these watches made serious differences both in terms of size and appearance. Maybe I will write something about these in the upcoming period. No lie, I wouldn’t think you could do such a thing for the Submariner. The thing is, the new submariner has grown in size, how about image? This thing is a bit like your height, but it used to be more molded, slimmer, and more feeble. If you ask whether Rolex crossed the red line with these movements in the submariner, it definitely passed for me like many real watch lovers. 40mm size, dial design, Mercedes scorpion, etc … These are the items that should stay on the other side of the red line. If you ask what will happen next, there will be very good sales again, interesting prices in the grey market … I have no doubt about them! If you say who will take it, I don’t know either!
Finally, a word about the watches for the new oyster perpetual models … Stella was a great job with its dial-like movement and new case. These also have a new 70 hours of reserve mechanism. The green dial is my favorite, but the yellow is also very beautiful!
