THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT AND BULOVA AMERICAN GIRL “K”

By

Due to the pandemic and the measures, it has brought, we spend more time at home which also means we spend more time on platforms such as Amazon Prime, HBO, Netflix and etc. Among many shows on such platforms, one of the most attention grabbing shows is The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix.

The name of the series comes from an actual move in chess. It is to temporarily sacrifice a pawn to gain control of the center of the board. Orphaned at a very early age in an intentional suicidal car crash, Beth survives and starts living in an orphanage at the age of 9. Beth learns how to play chess from the janitor of the orphanage. She becomes obsessed with the game and starts joining tournaments after being adopted by Alma. The series shows Beth’s development of chess carrier and her personal struggles.

In one scene, Beth’s step mother Alma gives Beth a very beautiful classic watch. It is Bulova American Girl “K”. This model was first introduced in 1957. The name of the model perfectly reflects the spirit of Beth who struggles against a man-dominated sport.

Produced in USA, American Girl “K” is powered by the manual-winding movement named 6BD with 17 jewels. Its tonneau-shaped case is in 10k gold. The design of the bracelet is very delicate. When the model was introduced it was sold for $59.50.

We see Beth wearing this watch all the time especially when she plays chess in tournaments. When she is depressed and addicted to alcohol, she recognizes that her watch is broken. This event becomes one of the turning points for her revival and then she goes to Russia to compete for being the best chess player of the time.

Apart from their material value, watches have also emotional value for most of us as seen in the Queen’s Gambit. Wearing a watch may sometimes mean more than it seems. Beth’s Bulova American Girl “K” reflects the freedom of women and their valuable efforts in patriarchal society. It is quite possible that this watch will be a symbol for those who loved the series The Queen’s Gambit.
