WHAT’S ON YOUR LEADER’S WRIST? – 2

By

As you know, on a previous article we have covered watch choices of world leaders. That article which was a result of an indepth research, gained a great deal of attraction from yourselves. This being the case we had no other choice but to widen our reasearch and come up with a new article on this subject.  On the previous article we have reviewed the watch choices of politicians leading nine different countries of the world. In this article, we are going to go over the watches of leaders of Greece, Israel, France and Netherlands together.

If you wish, lets start with French president Emmanuel Macron. Macron is not only one of a kind for the French politics but possibly the politics itself.  Macron borned in 1977 as a son of a non-religious doctor mother and a doctor father, baptized at age of 12 by his own will.  We are left to think nothing but he was considiring politics as a career even  in his childhood years.

Emmanuel Macron

Emmanuel Macron’s choice of watch is a Merci LMM-01. This, clearly is not a random choice.  Macron has build his career by distancing himself from political elite all along.  The biggest evidince of this might be Macron’s effort to  underline being a grandson of  an  illiterate member of working class in every opportunity he has while keeping  the fact that he is a son of an intellectual family behind the curtains at all times. This being the case, It is no surprise that he has chosen a quite reachable brand.

Merci LMM-01 – Mecanique

Merci LMM-01 is a design object. Aiming to manufacture watches stilized with smart design elements at a reachable price.  Also, there are humanitarian and visionary reasons behind the establishment of the brand.  While one of the goals of the brand is to provide employment opportunity for young designers, the other is to back the Madagascar education projects up. While funding Madagascar schools from earned revenues, by introducing young designers to teh industry ıt can be well said that brand is reaching both of its goals.

Merci LMM-01 comes in two models; a quartz version and a one with a hand wound mechanical version. Macron’s choice is the mechanical version by the way.  The piece has a 37.5 mm case  and water resistant up to 50 meters.  ETA 2801-2  caliber which is assembled in  Switzerland  has a 42 hours power reserve.

Design of the watch is inspired by the military watches of mid 20th century. Polished step bezel and brushed case is the two main elements of this inspiration. The most attractive element of the design of the watch is the drilled lugs. Not only those lugs make changing straps a lot easier but they also gives an elegant look to the watch.

Alexsis Çipras

Next in line, is a leader who have entered the politics scene with big hopes but stepped down very far from being match the expectations.  We refer to Alexis Tsipras whom the whole world including philosopher of our time Zizek expected him to establish democratic socialism but stepped down from political scene by leaving his seat to  Kyriakos Mitsotakis

Alexis Çipras

Upon his political career is ended up as a fiasco. The Tsipras whom we never lost our sympathy towards as he caused Europe to be haunted by a specter once again.

Tsipras choice was a modest but chic and a very reachable even by working class ; a Guess GC Classica Chronograph.  This model which comes forward as a young and energetic brand which is prefered by generatin Y was perfectly matching  both Tsipras’ political ideological  and  his young and dynamic image. Model uses a quartz movement. Dial glass is made from sapphire cyrstal which is resistant to scratches and water resistant up to 100 meters but not suitable for scuba diving.  A calender is located on the dial as well. Black leather strap is a touch to complete the elegance of the timepiece.

Binyamin Netanyahu

After two young leaders, lets visit a war horse. When said war horse, there is not a better example than Benjamin Netanyahu who is a prime minister of a country which is under constant war threat and has maybe one of the most controversial border line in the whole world. Netanyahu is also the first prime minister of Israel to born in Israel. He is not only a politician but a veteran who have participated in battles and led operations actively. He is a leader whose presence is  felt in  the whole world as much as in the Middle East.   His choice of watch matches this profile  perfectly. He is wearing a  Panerai PAM048. Panerai was a brand firstly manufactured for İtalian Marines as a military watch during the phase leading to World War II.  The brand kept manufacturing watches solely for military purposes up until 1993. He focused on civil market only after this year. As soon as they focused on the civil market they have located their deserved spot in the market in no time.  Immediatley stands out with its cushion shaped case, Panerai is amongst the most liked luxery watches and believes in a design philosophy which brings retro elements and modern details together.

Topped with an elegant black dial, the timepiece has a 40 mm stainless steel case and a self winding OP III Caliber mechanism. Has 42 hours of power reserve and has calender as well. We should indicate that brand is manufacturing their mechanisms in house as of 2005. On the side of the case, Panerai signature crown and crown guard catches the eye. Sapphire crystal glass is resistant to scratches and keeping its water resistance feature up to 100 meters. Luminescent dial and indexes can be read under all light conditions. Comes with two strap options; black or brown leather. Netanyahu’s choice is in favor of black leather. Taking the nature and the character of the leader into consideration, not a surprising one.

King of Netherlands  Willem-Alexander and his family.

In the previous article we have mentioned the English Royal Family’s watch choices, If you would remember. Let’s not keep the monarchy out  on this instance as well and this time let’s check the Netherlands Royal Family, at least the King of Netherlands  out.  Willem – Alexander  who born in 1967, acceded to the throne following his mother’s abdication in 2013.  Educated in public schools just like an ordinary Dutch citizen , he is graduated from Leiden University with a major in history.  Following his graduation Willem- Alexander whom has assigned to Dutch Royal Navy is a father to three princesses.

Everybodies eyes were locked to Willem – Alexander’s wrist for some time. His watch with a black strap was drawing a lot of attention but no one had yet been able to idemtify the actual brand.  Well, the mystry have been resolved with a photograph taken during Live Earth Run For Water event which he has attended and teh whole world learned what is on Willem – Alexander’s wrist; It was an Omega Speedmaster.

Omega Speedmaster

The initial release of the original Speedmaster dates back to 1957. Model was firstly designed for sports and racing world but it has known to go even up to start in the upcoming years.

Omega Speedmaster is only one of the Kings’ watches. Known for his passion towards watches have been spotted before with other precious timepieces. He had a Rolex Datejust on his wrist during his wedding in 2002. He was wearing a yellow gold  Master Control Calendar Moonphase  Jaeger-Le Coultre during his first daughter’s Christening.  The King  who was a member of the International Olympics Comittee  between the years of 1998 and 2013 also known to own and Omega De Ville Co-Axial 41 Chronograph Olympic Collection ref 4841.20.32 which is inspired by 1960 Roma Olympics.

If that is alright with you as well, let’s finish this article with the promise that we will keep watching the wrists of the world leaders for you and will keep on bring them to you their choice of timepieces.
